Commissioning Pathways exists to make a confusing, high-stakes decision clearer. The routes to becoming a commissioned officer in the United States uniformed services are scattered across dozens of official sites, each written for a single branch or program. We bring them together in one place, in plain language, with the trade-offs spelled out.
What we cover
We map the service academies, ROTC, Officer Candidate and Training Schools, direct commissioning for professionals, medical and health-professions programs, and enlisted-to-officer pathways — across all six Armed Forces, the NOAA and Public Health Service commissioned corps, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. We also explain the money: pay, the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the Yellow Ribbon Program, and the military retirement system.
Who we are
Commissioning Pathways is an independent educational project. We are not recruiters, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, any branch of service, or any federal agency. Our goal is simply to help students, professionals, and service members understand their options and ask better questions when they talk to an official recruiter.
Our editorial approach
We work from official sources — statute, service regulations, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Congressional Research Service, and the services' own recruiting materials — and we cite the specific basis for nuanced claims. Military programs change frequently, so we date our figures (pay figures reflect the 2026 tables) and we tell you when something should be verified directly with the relevant authority. If you spot an error, we want to fix it.
How we're funded
This site may display third-party advertising to cover hosting and maintenance costs, and readers can support the site directly. Advertising never influences our editorial content, and we do not accept payment to promote any specific program, school, or branch.
