Officer Candidate / Training School
If you already hold (or are finishing) a bachelor's degree, OCS/OTS is the quickest civilian-to-officer route — an intensive few-month course that turns a degree-holder into a commissioned officer, with no multi-year campus commitment. Every armed force runs one; here's how each works.
These courses are demanding leadership crucibles: military customs and drill, physical training, academics, and field leadership evaluations. They are open to qualified civilians, and many seats also go to prior-enlisted members earning a commission. (Note: the short staff-corps courses for already-credentialed doctors, lawyers, and chaplains — Navy ODS, Air Force COT — are a separate, shorter orientation, not the OCS/OTS below.)
Where each service trains its officers
Army OCS
Fort Moore, GA · ~12 weeks. Two phases of leadership, fitness, and field training; open to enlisted soldiers and degree-holding civilians. Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. The Army National Guard also runs a part-time State OCS (~16–18 months) and an accelerated (~8-week) version.
Navy OCS
Newport, RI · ~13 weeks. For college graduates; develops leadership, fitness, and naval knowledge. Commission as an Ensign. (Staff-corps pros instead attend the 5-week Officer Development School.)
Marine OCS
Quantico, VA. Graduates attend the 10-week OCC; college students use PLC over the summers. Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant — then every Marine officer attends The Basic School.
Air Force OTS
Maxwell AFB, AL · ~8.5 weeks. Restructured under "OTS-Victory" into five modules. For degree-holders; commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. OTS commissions officers for both the Air Force and the Space Force.
Space Force
Guardians commission through the same OTS at Maxwell AFB (plus USAFA and AFROTC). Same course, same 2nd Lieutenant commission, Space Force rank structure.
Coast Guard OCS
New London, CT · ~12 weeks. One of the Coast Guard's most competitive officer routes, open to civilians and prior service. Commission as an Ensign; opens all CG specialties.
